GEISTSTUDIES
About the Edition

Between “free but raw” and “scholarly but expensive”, an edition was missing.

Steiner's work is in the public domain and freely accessible — but in historical German spelling, uncurated and, in the free text versions, mostly without page references. The scholarly editions are excellent, but expensive and ordered by year of publication rather than by field of practice. GeistStudies closes this gap: thematically curated study editions — German with careful modernization, English in a new translation — carrying the page numbers of the complete edition, at the price of a paperback.

The method

Modernization that stays verifiable

In the German editions we modernize the spelling and, in most texts, also obsolete word forms and, where the sentence requires it, word order and sentence structure — never the thought, never Steiner's terms, never another author's wording. The Allgemeine Menschenkunde (GA 293) in Volume 1 has so far been brought into line in spelling only. The page turns of the printed complete edition stand as markers in the text.

The same passage, the same page turn: on the left the printed Gesamtausgabe (GA 34, Dornach 1987), on the right the text of Volume 1. Only the spelling changes here — muß becomes muss, except in the poet's line between « », which stays as printed.

Regel Z

Quote protection

Another author's wording between « … » is never modernized.

Quotations from other authors, historical formulations and source references between « … » stay letter for letter as printed — modernization ends at the quotation mark. When a sentence is rearranged, the sentence adapts to the quotation, never the quotation to the sentence.

Transparency

What AI does — and what it doesn't

This edition openly uses AI as a tool. What it produces passes rule-based checks; what carries meaning is decided by rules and humans.

What the AI does
  • First drafts of the linguistic modernization, paragraph by paragraph
  • Drafts of the editors' introductions
  • Arbitration between two OCR readings of a source
  • Translation drafts for the English editions
  • The podcast voices — every episode is labeled as AI audio
What rules & review steps secure
  • In the German editions, page markers complete for each source volume; the source text is compared with a second witness (scan of the print or a second digital version)
  • Regel Z: other authors' wording in « … » is locked against modernization
  • Per volume, one glossary for the German terms and one for their English translation
  • Texts edited in the current workflow are checked adversarially against the source by a second AI model

The build stops if old ß spellings, kk hyphenations or “Entwickelung”, remnants of the original publisher's apparatus, or quotations in the introduction that are missing from the text remain. Every volume lists its printed sources.
